Vietnam’s weak defense resulted in a 2-2 draw with Indonesia at the ASEAN Football Federation’s Suzuki Cup on Saturday.
In the 11th minute, Ngoc Hai scored the first goal for Vietnam after Thanh Luong took a corner kick and Van Dijk failed to clear the ball out.
With strong support from local fans at the My Dinh Stadium, Vietnam continued to attack in spite of Coach Toshiya Miura's surprising strategy, which involved keeping Cong Vinh and Tan Tai on the bench.
Indonesia leveled the score after Zamrun took the ball by mistake from Tien Thanh in the 32nd minute.
Vietnam continued to attack in the second half and by the 55th minute, it had racked up ten dangerous attempts on goal, while Indonesia had only one.
They substituted Cong Vinh into the match and scored a goal in the 69th minute following good coordination with Van Quyet.
Samsuil leveled the score for Indonesia in the 85th minute after defeating goalkeeper Nguyen Manh in an attack.
Vietnam faced Indonesia six times before the match and only won during a third-place playoff match at the 1996 Tiger Cup.
After the draw on Saturday, both Vietnam and Indonesia shared Group A's second place slot with one point each. Earlier the same day, the Philippines defeated Laos 4-1 to lead the board with three points.
In Group B, Malaysia will play Myanmar at 4PM on Sunday; Singapore will face Thailand at 7PM the same day.
