Under-23 squad announced
National football team coach Henrique Calisto on Tuesday announced the list of 22 players who will go to Laos for the 25th Southeast Asian Games.

Prominent among those who did not make it to the team were: goalkeeper Minh Nhut; defenders Van Hoc, Cao Cuong and Van Duyet; midfielders Van Khai and Tang Tuan; and striker Quang Vinh.

Calisto said he had thought a lot before making the final decision. He said he opted to choose the younger of two equally talented players.

He said five out of the seven players not chosen were qualified to go to Laos but he could only choose 22 names for his squad.

According to the tournament rules, each team can only have 20 players. Therefore, the Portuguese tactician will have to whittle down his list to 20 before he can register the official list of players for the tournament next Tuesday (Dec. 1).

The men’s football matches will kick off on December 3 and finish two weeks later.
