FIFA levies $23,000 fine on jailed Vietnam football stars
Two Vietnamese footballers, jailed last week in the biggest match fixing scam the nation has ever seen, will be each fined CHF15,000 (Swiss francs) or US$23,000 by world’s football governing body, FIFA.

However, Vietnam will not be striped of football silver medal it earned at SEA Games 23 because none of the regulations of the Southeast Asian Games covers match fixing.

Vietnam Football Federation will be responsible for paying the fine in case the two footballers fail to cover it, according to FIFA regulations.

FIFA rules stipulate that a footballer who is confirmed of match fixing by authorities will be fined for CHF15,000, and any of its members must send a report to FIFA after attending every international football tournament including invitational tournaments.

Thus, the VFF will have to send detailed report of its attendance to SEA Games 23 and match fixing of its footballers at the event.

Vietnam police found confirming evidence that two footballers Van Quyen and Quoc Vuong took part in match fixing, and arrested the two on December 20.
