The HD Bank Cup International Open Chess Tournament 2015 will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from March 16-23, with 78 players from 12 countries and territories.
Two local players, Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, are the top seed and no. 2 seed, respectively, at the 5th annual event.
Liem has 2,676 points and Son 2,659 points in the World Chess Federation’s Elo rating system.
Son is the reigning champion of the tournament.
Nguyen Anh Khoi, who won a gold medal in the under-12 boys category at the World Youth Chess Championships in South Africa last September, will also compete at the event.
Other strong players include Rakhmanov Aleksandr of Russia, and Sadorra Julio Catalino and Gomez John Paul of the Philippines.
Organizers have announced total prizes of US$35,000, including $12,000 for the winner.
There will be meetings between players and local fans and students to promote chess.
