Eleven-year-old Nguyen Anh Khoi, last year's world under-10 champ, upset several stronger players en route to finishing runner-up in the National Chess Championship in Ho Chi Minh City Monday.

The country's three strongest players, Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, and Nguyen Duc Hoa, did not play in the event since they are busy preparing for the Southeast Asian Games.

But it was still a strong field and Khoi's coaching staff only wanted him to play to gain experience.

After the first four games he had only 1.5 points, but in the next five he scored four wins and a draw to finish the tournament with 6 points, just 0.5 point behind champion Dao Thien Hai.

The women's championship was won by Nguyen Thi Thanh An from Hoang Thi Bao Tram on a better tie-break score after both finished on 7 points.
