Police in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap have arrested five men who allegedly robbed 25 taels of gold worth more than VND800 million (US$38,000) from an 86-year-old beggar.

Tran Quoc Viet, 28, Cao Van Sang, 19, Le Duc Duy, 18, Tran Van Thanh Dan and Nguyen Thai Tai, both 17, are currently detained for investigations on robbery charges.

The group confessed to police they had robbed Nguyen Van Cung, a homeless beggar in Tram Chim Town.

They said they had been watching Cung for days and noticed that he kept gold in his clothes.

On the evening of December 21, when Cung was sleeping in the corner of a market, the group grabbed the gold from him.

The police seized seven taels of gold and VND29 million ($1,375) in cash from the five men.

Cung, however, claimed he had lost 25 taels of gold in jewelry and other forms.

Cung said he had earned the gold after several decades of begging.

Police are still investigating the incident.
