A court in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on Thursday sentenced two young men to death and life imprisonment for the murder of their former high school teacher in a bid to rob her and settle a soccer gambling debt.
Nguyen Duc Dung, 20, and Tran Van Tan, 19, got death and life sentences respectively for killing 53-year-old Nguyen Thi To Nga, their literature teacher in the ninth grade, last June.
According to the indictment, the two had lost money in World Cup football betting and decided to rob Nga in order to settle the debt. The amount of debt was not revealed.
On the evening of June 23, 2010, Dung and Tan went with knives to Nga's house. Tan held her while Dung repeatedly stabbed her till she fell unconscious.
The two then took away the jewelry she was wearing as well as several other properties in her house.
When Nga's children came home, they found her dead body with multiple stab wounds in the garden.
Dung and Tan were arrested on July 5, 2010.
Police said the value of robbed properties was VND6 million (US$286).
