A 18-year-old was arrested in Hanoi after killing his grandmother to sell her earrings to buy a Christmas gift worth more than US$7 for his girlfriend.

The 74-year-old woman was found dead at a local pond, where her grandson, Phan Thanh Tung, had thrown her the night of December 24 with the help of his friend, a 17-year-old boy, Nguoi Lao Dong reported.

Tung sold his grandmother's earrings for VND400,000, of which he gave VND100,000 to his accomplice and used VND160,000 to buy a teddy bear for his girlfriend.

The boy told police that he saw his grandmother wearing the gold earrings and he wanted them.

Tung went to pick up his grandmother when she was visiting a daughter, and told her that there was a guest at the home. He then strangled her on the motorbike while his friend was driving.

Police are investigating.
