A young couple on the way to register their marriage were knifed in a brazen encounter by two former friends in downtown Ho Chi Minh City over a minor dispute Thursday.

The would-be bride and one of the two assailants were killed while her boyfriend was severely injured.

Lam Tri, 24, and his girlfriend, Ho Thi Ngoc Huyen, 21, were riding on Le Lai Street when brothers Nguyen Hoang Phuc, 26, and Nguyen Hoan Vu, 24, came up behind them on another motorbike.

Phuc, who was riding pillion, repeatedly stabbed Huyen in her back.

Tri stopped to take on the duo, and was also stabbed by Phuc.

Witnesses said Tri then grabbed the knife and stabbed Phuc until he collapsed, and also injured Vu.

Tri and Huyen were taken to hospital by bystanders, and Phuc by his brother.

Huyen and Phuc succumbed at the Sai Gon Hospital, while Tri's condition stabilized later the same day.

Police said Phuc and Tri were neighbors in an apartment building in District 1 since young, close friends, and served several years' jail time together.

Four months ago Phuc had asked Tri to recommend a pawnshop to pawn his motorbike. But when he got the bike back, Phuc suspected its parts had been replaced with dodgy ones. So he kept calling Tri to complain, causing their relationship to break down.

He and his brother attacked Tri and Huyen when they came to HCMC from Binh Duong -- to where they had moved -- to register their marriage, the police said.

They have taken Vu into custody for questioning and are investigating further.
