Worker negligence probed in death of six-year-old boy in school yard construction site

Police in the central province of Binh Thuan are investigating a construction company's workers for suspected negligence in the death of a six-year-old boy who drowned in a construction site pit three days earlier.

On August 31, Nguyen Gia Huy, a first grader in the Bac Phan Thiet Primary School in Phan Thiet City, drowned in a pit in the yard of his school.

Teachers found his body at around 1:30 p.m. while other pupils in the school were taking a nap.

According to police, the school had hired the Quan Trung Trading Limited Company, also the contractor for the newly built school, to fix the broken cesspit.

Workers of the company opened the lid of a pit where water is stored for firefighting, to take water out, but later forgot to cover it.

The police are trying to find out who opened the pit.

The teachers were also careless in letting Huy wander around, resulting his falling into the pit, the police said.
