More than 200 Japanese and Vietnamese engineers and workers on Friday started work on the first underground section of the Ho Chi Minh City metro system, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
The 38-meter-deep, four-story Saigon Opera House station is expected to finish in 2017.
The station represents the beginning of the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro system, which will run 19.7 kilometers between Ben Thanh Market in District 1 and Suoi Tien Theme Park in District 9.
According to the HCMC Urban Railway Management Board, it is expected that workers and engineers will finish building the first concrete floor by February 15, 2015.
On July 22, city workers cut down 41 Hopea oderatea trees, some of which were a century old, in front of the Saigon Opera House to make way for the underground metro station.
After the Saigon Opera House station is finished, new trees will be planted to replace them.
