A 13-year old boy is being treated at a Ho Chi Minh City hospital with severe burns after his mother doused him in gasoline and set him on fire last Friday.
Nguyen Xuan Thanh, a high school student in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, played truant on Thursday and Friday, his teacher told his mother Nguyen Thi Thom on Friday.
Thom, who rides her son to school every morning, went looking for him and found him playing online games at an internet shop nearby.
The 32-year old woman reportedly poured gasoline on him and set him on fire.
The internet shop owner, Nguyen Thanh Trung, who was still in shock, said: “The flames rose up to a meter high in my shop. I took a blanket and wrapped his body to stop the fire.
“Thom was ranting and scolding the boy when the flames engulfed him. Only when the fire was put out did she regain her calm and joined us in rushing the boy to the hospital.”
Thanh was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Ho Chi Minh City for specialized treatment for serious burns on his face, ears and neck.
Authorities said they have already filed charges against the woman, but allowed her to take care of her son.
