Police in Ho Chi Minh City have arrested two men for allegedly kidnapping a woman and holding her for a ransom of VND200 million, (US$9,000) in a hotel room where they threatened to torture and rape her.
The woman, known only as Trinh, 29, was rescued on Wednesday when police raided the Thu Le Hotel in Tan Phu District and arrested Tran Quoc Huy and Nguyen Van Dai.
Early the same day, her sister reported to the police that Trinh were kidnapped by several men led by Dung, a gangster in Tan Phu Dist. They said Trinh still owed Huy VND200 million, which she had loaned from him to bet on soccer games and lost.
They demanded that Trinh's sister transfer VND50 million to Dai's account immediately, and then handed over Trinh to Huy and Dai at the hotel.
According to the police, Dung and his henchmen beat Trinh, shocked her with electric batons and threatened to rape her unless the debt was paid.
Dung and his gang had left the hotel before the raid and remain at large, police said.
