A family in the outskirts of Hanoi mourned the loss of four lives Wednesday as they held a funeral for a woman who was pregnant with twins believed to have drowned herself along with her two-year-old son.
The body of Nguyen Thi Tham surfaced in a canal in Chuong My District on Tuesday. The 31-year-old woman was found tied to her son Vu Viet Huy with a shirt.
Locals commented that the tragedy marked the end of an unhappy marriage, Tien Phong newspaper reported.
Locals said Tham and her husband, Vu Viet Quang, 33, quarreled in the afternoon of March 10 and Tham took her son to the market to buy the red shirt that would later be used to tie him to her body.
The couple continued fighting on the street that same night, with Quang pushing Tham so that she hit her head on a parked car.
She then left with the son and was not seen again until the two were found dead. Tham was four months pregnant with twins.
Locals said Tham's marriage had been arranged by the two families. It went well until Huy's twin sister died when she was seven months old. The twins, Tham's first children, were born premature.
Tham soon began receiving sour treatment from her husband and his family that she lived with, according to locals.
Police are investigating further, though the family refused to allow an autopsy.
