A woman died on Sunday afternoon after being hit by a falling tree caused by strong winds while she was riding pillion on a motorbike in downtown Ho Chi Minh City.
Nguyen Thi Dung, 36, was riding pillion on the motorbike with her husband and two children on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street in District 1 at around 3 p.m. when high winds uprooted the tree whose trunk diameter is around 50 centimeters, causing it to fall, witnesses said.
Doctors at the Saigon General Hospital pronounced Dung dead at 4:30 p.m. as she succumbed to critical injuries. Her husband and children were slightly hurt.
Dang Thi Hong Loan, a witness, recalled: “The heavy rain and strong winds limited my vision when I was driving my motorbike on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street. Luckily, I was able to avoid the tree when it fell on my motorbike.”
Fierce winds also uprooted many other trees in downtown HCMC on Sunday afternoon.
