A court in Ho Chi Minh City on Monday sentenced a woman to nine years' imprisonment for killing her own daughter before trying to kill herself.
Nguyen Thi Hoai An, who has cerebral anemia, said she did that to end their “hard life” together. Her 1-year-old baby also had the condition and was suffering from leukemia, of which she did not have money for treatment.
An, 26, had the baby with her husband in October 2013. He worked at construction sites and only came home once a week. She stayed at home to take care of the girl and her paralyzed father.
The couple rowed regularly after they learned about their daughter's condition at eight months old. After one such argument in October 2014, the husband moved out.
She said she felt desperate and depressed and decided to kill both of them.
After suffocating the baby with a pillow, she cut her wrist and ankle before trying to hang herself with an electric wire.
She was rescued by neighbors, who rushed both of them to hospital where doctors annouced that the child was already dead.
