A Vietnamese woman was detained in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday in connection with an Internet dating scam allegedly led by a Nigerian.
The police said they arrested Phan Thi Kim Phuong, 30, in Tan Son Nhat Airport after she flew in from Malaysia, where she lived with the alleged ring leader, whose name was not disclosed.
They accused Phuong of playing a major role in fraudulent acts committed by the ring.
The ring members would pretend to be attractive and successful businesspeople living in Europe or America and hook up with their potential victims, all of them women, on Facebook.
When a victim has become emotionally involved, they would promise her valuable gifts, then faking phone calls and emails from customs and shipping agencies in Vietnam to ask her pay taxes or shipping fees to certain bank accounts.
The police alleged that many of those banks accounts were opened by Phuong after she joined the ring last August.
She received 7 percent on the total appropriated money, which the police estimated at more than VND8 billion (US$358,700).
The police are investigating further.
