A Ho Chi Minh City court has sentenced a 45-year-old woman to death for killing her husband, a police officer, last year.

Du Kim Lien was convicted March 29 of murdering Tran Xuan Chuyen, 52, a city traffic police officer by overdosing him on sleeping pills and injecting a pesticide.

She reportedly killed him for his refusal to sell their house to pay off her debts totaling VND1.3 billion (US$61,646).

He had wanted to divorce her.

On the night of March 11 last year she dissolved 10 sleeping pills in a glass of milk and gave it to him to drink.

The next morning, finding he was in a stupor but still alive, she put five more in some water and poured it into his mouth.
