Police in Hanoi Friday announced that local prosecutors have approved their proposal to charge a woman for joking about a bomb on a flight to the central resort town of Da Lat in July, Vietnamnet reported.
Ho Thi Thanh Tuyen, 24, is now pending for trial for charges of "interfering with air traffic," the newswire said.
According to the indictment, on July 9, when Vietnam Airlines' flight attendants were instructing passengers to fasten seat belts and put their suitcases into luggage boxes as regulated, Tuyen kept her handbag on her thighs.
Flight attendant Bui Tuan Anh then asked her to put it away, but Tuyen told him that because there was a bomb inside, she needed to keep it or it would explode. Tuyen immediately said that she was just joking.
However, Anh informed the flight's captain and chief attendant, and the captain decided to delay the flight for a security check. The plane by was already moving on the runway, Vietnamnet said.
Inspections later found no bomb, but the delay made Vietnam Airlines lose VND217 million (US$10,400).
