Traffic police in the north central province of Thanh Hoa seized more than 300 kilograms of wild animals, including venomous snakes, from a bus Monday.

The bus caught the attention of police after it picked up passengers on  locations not allowed for pickup on National Highway 45 through Thanh Hoa City, the capital of Thanh Hoa, Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper reported.

Police then stopped the bus for an inspection.

They found some sacks in the bus's trunk that contained 200 kilograms of water monitors, 60 kilograms of elongated tortoises and 50 kilograms of radiated ratsnakes.

Duong Van Trung, the bus driver, told police he was hired to transport the animals from the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap to the northern province of Quang Ninh.

When the police ordered Trung to produce papers for the batch, a man jumped off the bus and showed a transport permit granted to Nguyen Van Du, a resident in Quang Ninh, by the forest protection authorities of Thap Muoi District in Dong Thap Province.

As the police suspected the paper was forged, they confiscated the batch.

Police are continuing their investigation.
