Thai Nguyen police have detained a Hanoi woman suspected of attempting to kill a baby her husband had with another woman.
Do Thi Kim Duan, 35, is said to have pierced the head of a 40-day-old old baby named Nhat Minh with a needle between eight to 10 centimeters long out of jealousy, police of Vo Nhai District in the northern province told local newswire Vnexpress Wednesday.
Duan visited the baby at his house in Cuc Duong Commune of the district last Friday, introducing herself as the family of the baby's father whose name has not been released yet. The mother, Nguyen Thi Thanh, went to buy some food and Duan pushed the needle into the top of the head. Thanh returned to see her son bleeding and crying in pain. Duan had left on a motorbike with another woman.
The baby was rushed to Thai Nguyen General Hospital and the needle, identified as one used for sewing tires and bags, was removed after a one-hour operation.
Local police launched an investigation and arrested Duan the same day. The woman who accompanied Duan was let go.
Minh is recovering but doctor Dong Quang Son who participated in the surgery on Tuesday told Thanh Nien any impact of the incident will only show at age 5 or 6.
Investigations showed that Duan's husband had an affair with the 40-year-old Thanh when he was working at a construction site in the area. Minh was born on September 28.
Thanh told the police a woman introducing herself as Duan usually called and upbraided her during her pregnancy.
Police said they were collecting evidence to see if charges of attempted murder can be brought against Duan, a mother of two.
