The wife of a man who allegedly committed suicide in a police station in the southern Vietnamese province of Tra Vinh has demanded an investigation into his death, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Thursday.
Huynh Thi Minh Hien told local authorities Wednesday that her husband Pham The Hien, 28, had been summoned by police in Tan Hung Commune, Tieu Can District, for testing for drugs last Sunday.
When he tested positive for heroin, the police obtained a 24-hour detention order for him for possession of illegal drugs.
At around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday they informed Hien's family that he had hanged himself using a string from a mat in the lockup.
An autopsy by the Tra Vinh Province police found he had died of respiratory failure caused by the asphyxiation.
After Hien's family filed the complaint, the Ministry of Public Security said it would perform another autopsy.
