An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale occurred off the Vung Tau coast Wednesday afternoon, and its tremors were felt in Ho Chi Minh City, the Institute of Global Physics said.
The quake took place off the coast of Ba Ria Vung Tau Province, 200 kilometers from HCMC, at 2:24 p.m. and caused no damage, the institue said.
A security guard at the Kumho Asiana Plaza in District 1 said that many employees working in high floors rushed to the ground in panic as they felt tremors at that time.
A Thanh Nien reporter saw the Mien Dong Bus Station shaking, causing a two-meter-wide glass fall from the second floor to the ground and break into pieces.
Elsewhere in Dong Nai and Binh Thuan provinces, residents and employees also reported they felt their offices and houses tremble for several seconds.
On June 23 last year, Ho Chi Minh City was also affected by the aftershocks of a 4.7-magnitude quake took place off the Phan Thiet coast in the central province of Binh Thuan.
