Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested a 35-year-old motorbike driver for attacking a traffic police officer who tried to pull him over for not wearing a helmet.
Phan Van Tuan was in police custody for investigation into the charge of opposing government official on duty.
According to the police, at around 3:20 on February 11 sergeant major Ly Vinh Dat and captain Lang Van Huynh were patrolling in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 6 on a motorbike when they saw Tuan and his friend Do Thien Loi riding without a helmet.
They signaled Tuan to pull over but he rode on. The officers gave chase to Tuan and at a section of Gia Phu St. they cut off his bike.
Tuan lost control of his bike and fell, but he got up and suddenly punched Officer Dat in his face, leaving him unconscious with a bleeding nose.
Tuan and Loi attempted to flee but were held by Officer Huynh and local residents.
Dat was taken to the HCMC Police Hospital to treat his face injury.
