A Ho Chi Minh City court on Wednesday sentenced a man to one year in jail for robbing an iPhone from a Chinese tourist in the city downtown, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
According to the indictment, Nguyen Thanh Tuan, 26, was driving his motorbike at around 7 p.m. on February 3 when he saw Li Jun Jing taking photos using her iPhone 5.
Tuan stopped his bike, walked to Li and grabbed her phone. He then attempted to flee the scene on his bike.
However, Li chased Tuan and screamed for help. Tuan fell off the bike and was nabbed by some police officers on duty nearby.
Tuan told the court he committed the crime because he had no money on that day. However, he also told the court that he earned around VND800,000 (US$38) per day as a Vinasun taxi driver.
