A cultural official in north central Vietnam gave himself up on Saturday, admitting to having defrauded around 50 people out of money after lying that he would help them get jobs.
Bui Xuan Lam, deputy director of Nghe An Province's Culture and Information Center, told the police he had amassed VND3.7 billion (US$177,300) via the scam, news website Dan Tri reported.
Lam promised job seekers that he would put in a good word for them with employers or otherwise use his influence to help.
He showed up after local media reported the accusations made by his victims, who only realized they had been conned after Lam suddenly disappeared early last December. He requested medical leave through January 30, but did not return to his office after that.
The center has suspended Lam while the case is investigated further.
