The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court Thursday sentenced a 21-year-old man to death for murdering a colleague in a robbery attempt that netted him a little more than US$10.
Nguyen Van Toi, 21, told the court that he had obtained work as a waiter at Dai Nam restaurant in the city through an employment agency.
He noticed that Tran Ngoc Phu was assigned to handle money for the restaurant.
In December 2009, Toi beat a sleeping Phu in the face and head until the latter lost consciousness.
He found VND183,000 in Phu's pocket and VND38,000 in a wardrobe that Phu kept the restaurant's money. He escaped to his home in the central region's Gia Lai Province but was caught the next day.
Toi was paid VND1.2 million a month at the restaurant, plus meals and accommodation right there.
The judges said Toi committed the murder with cold determination. He "cannot be changed" and "should be eliminated from the society," they said.
