A court in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday gave a three-month suspended sentence to a local woman who had stolen more than US$5,000 from her Swiss boyfriend in December.
Nguyen Thi Vu Phuong, 32, admitted to stealing from Zund Peter Albert, who had spent days with her at a hotel on Bui Vien Street, when the 70-year-old man were out in the morning of December 5.
Phuong took all of the cash kept inside his suitcase.
He discovered the theft later and reported to local police.
When Phuong came back to the hotel the same evening, she was taken to the police station where she later admitted to the crime.
Phuong, a private English tutor, told police that she needed the money to pay for debts because her child was sick.
Police later recovered all the stolen money and gave it back to the victim.
