A Vietnamese woman has been arrested in Japan on suspicion that she was a broker for fake marriages with Japanese people.
Tran Thi Xuan Phuong caught the police's attention when she submitted files for marriage registration in Tokyo, the Vietnam News Agency reported Tuesday, citing Japan's national public broadcasting corporation NHK.
Phuong, who was living in Saitama to the north of Tokyo, was trying to register papers for a fake marriage between a Japanese man and a 39-year-old Vietnamese woman, the city police said.
They said Phuong had helped another broker in Vietnam make fake birth certificates for the woman to go to Japan.
Investigations show that Phuong has brokered at least eight fake marriages, earning around US$39,000 from each registration, police said.
