Hanoi police arrested Wednesday a Vietnamese woman for stealing the bag of the Kazakh ambassador to Vietnam in a local supermarket.
Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, 27, is being detained for investigation of suspected theft, news website Dan Tri quoted police of Bac Tu Liem District as saying.
On July 10, Beketzhan Zhumakhanov, Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Vietnam, was shopping at Metro Thang Long Supermarket in Bac Tu Liem when he found out that his bag, which he had placed in his shopping cart, had been stolen.
Police investigated and arrested Trang, who admitted to stealing the bag, which contained VND2.6 million (US$122) and $32, and an iPhone 5.
Trang told police she stole the bag from the ambassador’s shopping cart, which was left unattended near the fruit kiosks.
She then sold the phone for VND6.5 million ($306) and used up the money.
Bac Tu Liem police have claimed the phone back and returned it to the ambassador.
They said Trang had two previous convictions for theft.
