Vietnamese woman allegedly beaten by Taiwanese husband

Vietnamese authorities have received a call for help from the family of a local woman who married a Taiwanese man two years ago and has been allegedly beaten by him ever since.

Nguyen Kim The, a 58-year-old resident of Thoi Lai District in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, reported to authorities that her 29-year-old daughter, Phan Thi Kim Thanh, married Chung Yung Hua in Ho Chi Minh City in 2009.

The marriage was arranged through a brokerage service. After the wedding, Chung gave his wife's family VND5 million (US$238) and the couple left for Taiwan in February 2010.

The said Thanh has only called home a couple of times since. When Thanh was asked about her life in Taiwan, she refused to answer.

On Dec 3, a woman who introduced herself as Thanh's friend in Taiwan called the family, informing them that Thanh was being detained by her husband in their home and that she the frequent victim of beatings.

The woman relayed that Thanh asked her to inform her family of the situation, in order to seek for help from Vietnamese authorities to return to Vietnam.

When Thanh's mother called her son inlaw, he told her not to intervene and hung up.
