A Hanoi traffic police officer has been suspended for allegedly insulting and assaulting a traffic violator.
A man posted a short video clip on his Facebook page showing an altercation between him and some officers. At the end there are sounds of someone being attacked.
The man, who used a “fake” name, said he was driving a motorbike Wednesday afternoon when he was stopped at the Giai Phong-Dai Co Viet intersection by the officers.
They told him he had run the red light, but he argued it was still yellow when he crossed it.
As the argument got heated, the officers insulted him and called some tattooed men to the spot to threaten him, he alleged.
The officers went on to beat him, he said.
He refused to sign the traffic ticket but was forced to do so, he said.
Soon after the video went viral on the internet, the Hanoi police sent inspectors to the spot, and they identified the officer who was filmed insulting the man as Captain Vu Viet Duc.
The man has been identified as Nguyen Giang Nam, 22, of Ninh Binh Province.
Duc repeatedly denied assaulting Nam. The department is investigating
