A Vietnamese and four Thai nationals involved in a dog trafficking ring have been sentenced to four months in jail each and fined between US$385-770 by a court in Thailand.

The punishment was only half of the prosecutors' recommendation as the traffickers honestly admitted their crime, the court in Nakhon Phanom Province said.

On August 11, Thai police caught the men near the Lao border with five trucks carrying nearly 2,000 dogs bound for Vietnam to be served as meat.

They were charged under the Animal Epidemic Act 1956 that prohibits relocating animals to zones at risk of epidemics without permission.
