A court in Vietnam's Mekong Delta has sentenced a woman to 23 years in jail for killing a child to rob a pair of gold earrings worth around US$30.
Nguyen Thi Cam Dang, 19, was accused of murder and robbery, news website Dan Tri reported Friday.
On a day in early January, Dang drowned the 3-year-old baby of a close neighbor in a local stream in Bac Lieu Province before taking the earrings and leaving the body in the water, the indictment said.
The woman saw the jewelry earlier and planned to take them, it said.
Dang's family tried to get her sentence reduced by presenting documentation showing she was of unsound mental health.
But the judges ruled her mental faculties must have functioned well when she committed the murder, and they awarded the punishmenet suggested by the prosecutors, news website VnExpress reported Friday.
Robberies involving violence have been on the rise in Vietnam and in many cases, children and old people have not been spared.
