Vietnamese sentented after failed murder of abusive husband

A court in southern Vietnam sentenced a woman to three years in jail,  on Tuesday, for attempted murder of her abusive husband.
According to her indictment,  Le Thi Hai, 58, of Tien Giang Province sedated her husband Le Van Duc before trying to electrocute him last October, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Hai had dissolved two sleeping pills into a plastic bag of wine rice that her husband ordered her to buy him every day.
After drinking the wine that evening, he went to bed. Hai waited until late that night to plug in an exposed electrical wire and touch the stripped end to his body.
The shock only woke him up and Duc reported Hai to the police the next morning.
Her sentence was reduced as the crime had been rooted in Duc's abuse. Duc usually got drunk and beat his wife, despite the authorities’ intervention many times.
