Police in the south central province of Binh Thuan on Monday sentenced a man who, on more than one occasion, threw his 14-month-old son into water, to five years in prison for attempted murder.

The indictment said Le Quoc Bao Thanh, 29, had thrown his son into a three-meter deep canal on March 21, after coming home drunk, news website VnExpress reported.

Thanh first beat the boy, and his wife Cao Thi Hien, 21. Unable to walk due to a traffic accident, Hien asked her brother, Cao Nuoi, to remove the baby from the violent scene.

But Thanh chased after Nuoi, grabbing an axe and threatening to kill him. He returned the baby out of fear.

Thanh then plunged the boy to the canal around 200 meters from home. Nuoi saved the infant boy with the help of several neighbors.

Investigations found the same thing happened to the baby three days earlier and neighbors had to fish him out.

Locals said that Thanh repeatedly beat his wife and son when he was drunk.
