Members from one of the gangs thought the officers, who were in plain clothes at the time, were their rivals and started throwing rocks and canes at them.
One officer, 30-year-old  Nay Plong, died on the spot after a rock hit his head and he fell. The other, 27-year-old Nguyen Thanh Trung, suffered internal injuries and is still in critical condition.
Gia Lai police are questioning some suspects and looking for others.
