Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested three people accused of beating to death a motorist who injured a three-year-old girl in a traffic accident, last year.
Nguyen Thanh Loi, 19, was detained on murder charges and Le Hong Cuong, 32, and Le Van Thuc, 24, face public nuisance charges.
On June 23, 2013 - the day of the crime - police arrested and charged Le Van Quynh, 27, for murder.
On that day, Nguyen Huu Dien, 22, was driving two friends down Street 6B in Binh Tan District when he hit three-year-old Ly Minh Tam as she ran across the street.
The three men and the baby’s mother took the girl to Trieu An Hospital.
While Dien waited to reimburse Tam’s mother for the treatment of the girl's minor injuries, Quynh (Tam’s uncle), and his friend Loi appeared and asked who had hit his niece.
After Dien admitted to having done so, the two men beat him unconscious. Doctors at Trieu An hospital transferred Dien to Cho Ray Hospital where he succumbed to multiple injuries.
The assailants turned themselves in to the police later that day, but only Quynh was arrested.
Dien’s friend, Le Hoang Vinh, told Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper that they worked for the same company and that the accident occurred as the group left a karaoke lounge after celebrating payday.
Vinh followed Dien to the hospital, where a group of about five people attacked Dien.
An, Dien's other passenger at the time of the accident, said a crowd of more than five people attacked Dien; An further claims the mob beat him severely when he attempted to protect his friend.
“A group of people punched and kicked Dien and banged his head against the ground until he lost consciousness,” he said, adding that the assailants did the same thing to him.
