A senior tax officer in Tay Ninh Province in southern Vietnam has been sentenced to five years in prison for taking bribes and helping a company reduce its tax bill illegally.
The court said Ho Van Hoa was supposed to collect taxes and fines worth VND2 billion (US$91,680) from Venky’s Vietnam, an Indian-owned animal feed company, last November.
However, he offered to bring the amount down to VND430 million if they paid him some money.
The 50-year-old, then deputy head of an inspection office at Tay Ninh Tax Department, had met with the company's director many times after the inspection and received VND2 million.
Police caught him when he was receiving another VND30 million at a karaoke parlor.
