The Party unit of the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang has admitted it was wrong to allow a senior official to use a blue-colored license plate meant for official vehicles on his private car.
The unit said in a report to Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong on Monday that the act was illegal and will not be repeated again.
Trong previously ordered an investigation into Trinh Xuan Thanh, deputy chairman of Hau Giang Province People’s Committee, for illegally using the official license plate for his luxury Lexus.
That came after Thanh Nien published report about the case on June 3, 2016.
In Vietnam, official cars may enjoy certain privileges on the streets.
Thanh, 50, attracted attention with his VND5.7 billion (US$255,189) car.
The Hau Giang Communist Party Unit said the province could not afford an official car for Thanh when he took office as the provincial deputy chairman, so it allowed him to put the blue plate on his private vehicle.
