A court in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday sentenced a man to 17 years in jail for raping a three-year-old girl at the medical center where he was an employee.
Ta Quang Binh, 31, who was a nurse at the city's Community Healthcare Center, was convicted of "child rape" in the "very serious" category according to the Vietnamese Penal Code.
The judge said Binh had taken advantage of his position to sexually abuse the girl that he was assigned to administer a health check.
The girl, only identified as V., was brought to the center by her mother on June 12 last year, for an examination. The girl was suffering from asthma and a chronic cough.
Binh was in the room with V. while the mother waited outside. He then asked the mother to go pay the medical fee while her daughter rested in the room.
When mother returned, she caught Binh struggling with her daughter as the girl cried out in pain.
Other people in the hospital helped arrest Binh while the girl was rushed to hospital.
Nearly 1,000 children are sexually abused every year in Vietnam, according to a report issued last year by the Ministry of Public Security.
