A Vietnamese man who said he unintentionally broke six of a Russian boy's teeth while teaching him to play golf paid US$12,000 in compensation to the boy's family, police in the south central province of Khanh Hoa said Wednesday.
The man known only as H. claimed it was just an accident, not an attack.
The police tracked down H. at the request of a Russian tourist named Victor, 39, who said his son Stepan, 14, was seriously injured after an unusual incident.
According to Victor, he was playing golf with Stepan at a golf course near Diamond Bay Resort & Spa in Nha Trang City on Sunday when a Vietnamese man came and asked for permission to teach Stepan to play.
After Victor agreed, the man picked up Stepan's club and cracked the boy's face with it, breaking six teeth and causing other injuries to his face.
The man fled the scene as the boy was rushed to the hospital, Victor said.
Victor had asked the police to find the man and make him pay for his son's injuries.
Police then found out H. was a guest who was staying at Diamond Bay.
After receiving $12,000 from H., the boy's family flew back to Russia.
