Police in the central province of Nghe An Tuesday arrested five people possibly working for a labor company for allegedly beating a man to death after he asked for the return of US$2,500 he had paid the company for an overseas job.

Tuoi Tre newspaper said the five men, aged between 21 and 35, attacked Nguyen Quang Hanh at the office of Cosevco Import Export Construction Center the previous day.

One of them, Pham Van Nguyen, 22, stabbed Hanh in the back, and the 35-year-old died later in hospital.

The police arrested the five at a local hotel after being tipped off about their whereabouts.

Hanh had paid the company $5,500 to get a job in Angola in southern Africa.

But after nothing happened for some time, he went to the company several times to cancel the contract and get his money back. He had managed to obtain $3,000.

The police are investigating if the five work for the company or are gangsters hired to attack the man.

They have told the company to pay for the man's funeral and return the $2,500 to his family.
