A court in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday sentenced a man to eight years in prison for blackmailing a family with private sex videos he accidentally found on a computer.
Nguyen Phu Hoa, 48, was charged with property appropriation and extortion, local media reported.
According to the indictment, Hoa was working for a home business of a woman in 2013 and she gave him an old laptop that she no longer used.
While repairing it, he found some videos of his boss’s son having conjugal sex. There were also nude pictures of the son and his wife.
In June 2014, he had some argument with other colleagues and decided to quit.
Then he came up with the blackmail scheme. He pretended to be a stranger and sent a card with the private videos and pictures to his former boss, threatening to publish them online.
He demanded VND5 billion (US$233,000), but after several negotiations, he accepted VND400 million.
The boss asked to meet him at a café to give the money, but she also informed the police.
Hoa was caught right after receiving the money on November 8 last year.
