Police in central Vietnam are investigating into what caused the sudden death of a local man on Saturday morning, only hours after he was taken into police custody.
Nguyen Van Tinh, 39, and his neighbor Nguyen Van Canh were caught by police playing card games at Canh’s house in Ha Tinh Province at around 4 a.m. on Saturday.
According to authorities, the two drunken men resisted the officers, even yelling at them.
Police detained both, seizing a deck of cards and VND72,000 (US$3.6) worth of cash believed to be their bet money.
Tinh, 39, died at around 9 a.m, five hours after he was detained at a local police station.
Head of the police station Tran Khanh Dung said police had not beaten or injured Tinh.
“We noticed that Tinh showed signs of exhaustion, which we thought may be because he was drunk,” Dung told Thanh Nien.
“Therefore we let him sleep on a chair in our office.”
“At around 8 a.m., we saw him getting worse, then we took him to the local medical station. He died when being taken to a larger hospital."
Chief of the Ky Anh District’s Police Department, Dang Hoai Son, said investigators had conducted an autopsy on the man, but failed to ascertain the cause of his death.
“We has requested the national forensic science institute to look into the case,” said Son.
