Border guards in the northern province of Quang Ninh arrested a man who was allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly nine kilograms of heroin and precursors into China, Tien Phong newspaper reported Tuesday.

Le Hiep, 36, was caught trying to illegally cross the border in Mong Cai town Sunday, the report quoted the provincial border guards as saying.

A search of his backpack produced over four kilograms of heroin and some 4.2 kilograms of a yellowish powder later identified as a substance used to produce drugs.

Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported that Hiep had been hired to carry the drugs from Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi to Mong Cai and on to China by a man from the northern city of Hai Phong.

The police are investigating.

Vietnam has some of the world's toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
