Police in Hanoi have said the man who burned himself to death on a street Tuesday committed suicide because he could not pay off his debts and the money he pocketed from his company.
The man, who has been identified as 35-year-old Ho Thanh Hung, was an employee of a local labor company,Vietnamnet quoted police as saying.
The newswire quoted police as saying that they found documents recording the Hung's debts at the site where he set himself on fire.
Police said Hung rode an SYM Attila to the area near the Red River's dyke in Dong Da District on Tuesday.
He stopped to put all of his identification documents into the bike's under-seat storage.
He then took out a bag of fuel, poured it over himself, and set himself on fire, Vietnamnet reported.
According to police, despite locals' efforts to extinguish the fire, the man died on the spot due to severe burns.
