A 49-year-old man has admitted that he bought six monkeys and 12 cats and slaughtered them at his home in the central province of Nghe An.
Le Ba Thuan said he wanted to cook monkey bones to make a glue-like product, which some people believe can have medicinal properties.
Police on Friday summoned Thuan and two other people for interrogation. Thuan reported that the two men had helped him with the slaughter.
The case was detected after the environment protection group Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV) reported to Nghe An authorities that it had seen terrifying photos
of many monkeys being slaughtered on a Facebook page since January 2.
The Facebook page belongs to Chu Van Cuong, 26.
Cuong later confessed that he took the photos at Thuan’s house and posted them to get attention.
Thuan confessed he bought the animals about a month ago and Cuong visited him when the animals were being killed and processed.
Park ranger Le Ngoc Huu said his agency and the police are expanding the investigation, suspecting the people involved may be members of a large wildlife trading racket.
