11 Vietnamese people were cheated out of nearly US$14,000 by a woman in Macau who gambled the sum away after procuring it from the foreigners as job-seeking fees.

Police said the woman named Wong, 48, had approached a Vietnamese woman early this month saying she knew many local hotels in need of cleaners that she could introduce Vietnamese workers to.

But she said she had to pay 10,000 Macau Pataca ($1,251) per person to cover fees and work permit costs, according to a Friday report by Macau Daily Times.

After collecting the money from the Vietnamese in need of work, she told them to wait for her in front of an immigration agency on Monday this week to submit the applications for work permits.

The Vietnamese told police about Wong after she didn't show.

Wong was arrested at Senado Square, a place where immigrants in Macao often gather. Police said she might have been looking for her next victims.

The woman said she had spent all the money at casinos.
