Hai Phong City border guards seized dozens of iPhones, iPads, and other electronic items from a fishing boat last Friday (January 18), with the crew claiming they had found them floating in bags at sea.
The boat captain Pham Van Khien, 45, a city resident, was accosted by a Do Son District patrol boat near Dau Island at 3 a.m., and he failed to produce documents to prove the goods' origin.
The seized goods are estimated at be worth around VND1 billion (US$48,000).
Khien said he and his two men were catching cuttlefish at around 1 a.m. that day four nautical miles from Dau Island when they saw the 25 sacks drifting in the water, and picked them up.
They are being questioned at the Do Son District Border Guard Station.
